k.u.k. Postmusik Tirol (Austria)

Musical director:
Dr. Werner Mayr

This band is dedicated to old Austrian music and performs in traditional postmen’s tunics. 120 years ago, some postmen decided to organise a carnival ball for their colleagues and naturally needed music for the ball. Postal inspector Anton An der Lan zu Hochbrunn, a great music lover and idealist, made the suggestion of founding his own postal band.

The Postmusik is the only one of the seven Austrian postal bands to still wear a uniform. It is that of the postmen in the founding year 1904 – a ‘k.u.k. The uniform was introduced under Emperor Franz Josef I and won first prize as the most beautiful uniform in the world at the Paris World Exhibition.

The fact that Postmusik occupies a top position in the ranks of Tyrolean brass bands is not least thanks to the renowned bandleaders. In 2006, the name of the association was changed to ‘k.u.k. Postmusik Tirol’, the musical orientation was redefined: in keeping with the uniform, the focus was on old Austrian music. With this specialisation, the musicians want to maintain the long tradition, but also implement new ideas and visions.

True to Österreichische Post AG’s motto ‘If it’s really important, then it’s better to go by post’, the 50 musicians and 4 sutlers want to establish themselves musically in the Tyrolean brass music region, but also beyond its borders at home and abroad.
