The rise from a small joinery to a renowned drywall construction company

The company Trockenbau Wäntig from Schneeberg believed in the brass music festival from the very beginning and was one of the first supporters. Not only with financial means, but also with manpower. To this day, employees come to set up the tents and are responsible, among other things, for positioning the beer table sets, which they align perfectly with the seating plan using a line laser so that escape and rescue routes are maintained in accordance with the safety concept.

It all started in her own flat on Brünlasberg Aue. After the end of the GDR, Gudrun Wäntig set up her own business and employed two carpenters from the former BMK Süd, where she was responsible for this department. At that time, drywall construction was largely only used in industry. Then this technology was also used in residential construction. Not only in new builds, but also in renovations to cover dilapidated walls. As a result, the newly founded company received many orders in the 1990s.

The company grows and settles in one of the first industrial estates in the Westerzgebirge – in Schneeberg. In 1998, daughter Stefanie, who graduated from high school as a skilled construction worker and then studied civil engineering, joins the company. Today, she is the head of a trade for which there is now a separate training programme. Six drywall fitters are being trained in the Wäntig family business, which has a total of 25 employees.

‘Dry construction is a key trade and I’m passionate about it.’ Stefanie Wäntig, owner of dry construction company

Drywall construction is not a trade for everyone, says the company owner: ‘You need a lot of knowledge about heat, cold, noise, fire and radiation protection and you also need to know a lot about the interrelationships in the specialist areas of electrics and building installations. There are many standards and regulations, especially in industry or hospitals. It’s not just a case of fitting plasterboard, but also improving the thermal insulation or the acoustics.’

Rooms can be designed flexibly and quickly with drywall. Technology and installations can be concealed in the cavities. The practical and useful can be combined with the beautiful. Stefanie Wäntig is a member of the board of the Federal Association for the Dry Construction and Finishing Trades and is passionately involved in the German Young Talent Championship Ausbau-Held.de.
