The tuba-carpenter

Musicians from the miners’ brass orchestra also produce commemorative certificates for orchestras

Sunday is the day of farewells. Each orchestra plays once more on this day before travelling home. Guest gifts are exchanged at the end of each concert. From Aue-Bad Schlema there is a certificate with the current logo and the participants.

What few people realise is that the frames of the certificates are genuine Erzgebirge craftsmanship. And very personalised ones at that. This is because the certificates come from the host music association itself. Reinhard Schramm plays the tuba with the Aue-Bad Schlema miners’ brass band in his spare time. The 67-year-old earns his living with his own carpentry business in the neighbouring village of Albernau.

Reinhard Schramm has been playing tuba with the Aue-Bad Schlema Miners’ Wind Orchestra since 1994.

The master of his trade not only has the machines to make the frames, but above all the tools and ideas. Because every year the frame looks different and the types of wood are also different. Last year, he placed the musician figurines, which Bernd Sparmann from Schneeberg cast in pewter, in a mine to make the anniversary a special memory.
